AMC Coming Soon.It is about the mischievous adventures of an animated marionette named Pinocchio and his father, a poor woodcarver named Geppetto. It was originally published in a serial form as The Story of a Puppet Italian : La storia di un burattino in the Giornale per i bambinione of the earliest Italian weekly magazines for children, starting from 7 July The story stopped after nearly 4 months and 8 episodes at Chapter 15, but by popular demand from readers, the episodes were resumed on 16 February Since then, the spread of Pinocchio on the main markets for children's books of the time has been continuous and uninterrupted, and it was met with enthusiastic reviews worldwide.

A universal icon and a metaphor of the human conditionthe book is considered a canonical piece of children's literature and has had great impact on world culture. Philosopher Benedetto Croce reputed it as one of the greatest works of Italian literature.

According to extensive research done by the Fondazione Nazionale Carlo Collodi in the late s and based on UNESCO sources, the book has been adapted in over languages worldwide, [3] while as of it has been translated into over languages.

The story begins in TuscanyItaly. A carpenter named Master Antonio, but whom everyone calls Master Cherry, has found a block of wood which he plans to carve into a leg for his table. When he begins, however, the log shouts out. Frightened by the talking log, Master Cherry gives it to his neighbor Geppettoan extremely poor man who plans to make a living as a puppeteer in hopes of earning "a crust of bread and a glass of wine".

Geppetto carves the block into a boy and names him " Pinocchio ". As soon as Pinocchio's nose has been carved, it begins to grow with his congenital impudence.

Before he is even built, Pinocchio already has a mischievous attitude; no sooner than Geppetto is finished carving Pinocchio's feet does the puppet proceed to kick him. Once the puppet has been finished and Geppetto teaches him to walk, Pinocchio runs out the door and away into the town.

He is caught by a Carabinierewho assumes Pinocchio has been mistreated and imprisons Geppetto. Left alone, Pinocchio heads back to Geppetto's house to get something to eat. Once he arrives at home, a talking cricket who has lived in the house for over a century warns him of the perils of disobedience and hedonism.

In retaliation, Pinocchio throws a hammer at the cricket, more accurately than he intended to, and accidentally kills it.

That evening, Pinocchio falls asleep with his feet on the stove, and wakes to find that they have burned off. Geppetto is released from prison and makes Pinocchio a new pair of feet. In gratitude, Pinocchio promises to attend school, and Geppetto sells his only coat to buy him a school book. On his way to school the next morning, Pinocchio encounters the Great Marionette Theatre, and he sells his school book in order to buy a ticket for the show.

The marionettes on stage recognize him in the audience and call out to him, angering the puppet master Mangiafuoco. The puppet master initially decides to use Pinocchio as firewood but ultimately releases him and gives him five gold pieces to give to Geppetto.

As Pinocchio travels home to give the coins to his father, he meets a fox and a cat. The Cat pretends to be blind, and the Fox pretends to be lame. A white blackbird tries to warn Pinocchio of their lies, but the blackbird is eaten by the Cat. The two animals convince Pinocchio that if he plants his coins in the Field of Miracles outside the city of Catchfoolsthey will grow into a tree with gold coins. They stop at an inn, where the Fox and the Cat gorge themselves on food at Pinocchio's expense and ask to be awoken by midnight.

Two hours before the set time, the pair abandon Pinocchio, leaving him to pay for the meal with one of his coins. They instruct the innkeeper to tell Pinocchio that they left after receiving a message stating that the Cat's eldest kitten had fallen ill and that they would meet Pinocchio at the Field of Miracles in the morning.

They take off ahead of Pinocchio and disguise themselves as bandits while Pinocchio continues on toward Catchfools, despite warnings from the Talking Cricket's ghost. Was there ever a scarier, more exciting animated feature than "Pinocchio"?

I doubt it - at least not if you were between the ages of 5 and 10 when you saw it, and could identify with its blockheaded little hero. Pinocchio, who is not the brightest character in the history of cartoons, wants only to be a good little boy, but he's trapped by scoundrels who want to use him as a sideshow attraction, and then he's kidnapped and sent to an island where he will be turned into a donkey and put to work in the salt mines all day long.

I remember seeing "Pinocchio" for the first time when I was just about the right age, and identifying with every single moment of the movie. Seeing it again the other day, for the third or fourth time, I was struck again by what a great animated film it is. Many people choose " Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs " as their favorite feature cartoon from Disney's golden age.

My choice is "Pinocchio. New films like " The Little Mermaid " and " Beauty And The Beast "have returned to this tradition, thanks to labor-saving help from computers, but in real human artists lovingly illustrated every frame of this movie, and weren't afraid to take pains with the details, like the waves on the ocean that curl back in horror at the approach of Monstro the Whale.

The movie looks great, it contains terrific songs including the immortal "When You Wish Upon a Star"and the story is scary in a way kids can identify with. Pinocchio is without a doubt the most passive and simple-minded of the Disney cartoon heroes, but he's surrounded by a colorful gallery of villains and connivers, including the evil Stromboli, who thinks there is money to be made from a wooden puppet who can walk and talk. And on the good side, of course, there are Jiminy Cricket, whose high-wire act on a violin string is one of the greatest moments in the history of animation, and the kindly old Geppetto, who wants a son and is overjoyed when his puppet comes to life.

The scenes that haunted my childhood dreams mostly took place on Pleasure Island, that isle of lost boys where the carnival pleasures of shooting pool and smoking cigars were only a lure to trap the kids before they could be turned into donkeys. And then of course there is the thrilling adventure with Monstro the Whale, whose cavernous belly swallows up Geppetto when he goes to sea in search of his missing son.

The beauty of "Pinocchio" is that what happens to Pinocchio seems plausible to the average kid - unlike what happens, say, to the Little Mermaid. Kids may not understand falling in love with a prince, but they understand not listening to your father, and being a bad boy, and running away and getting into real trouble.

The movie is genuinely exciting and romantic, great to look at, and timeless. NOTE: The last time I saw "Pinocchio," inthe movie was being projected in a "cropped" format that made it appear wider, but at the cost of lost images at the top and bottom of the screen. When I complained, Disney blamed the cropping on the projectionist, claiming he didn't use the correct aspect ratio. Don't let that happen to you with this wonderfully restored version, its colors fresh and sparkling, which is being shown in the original, classic 1-to If the picture on the screen looks proportionately wider than a TV screen, demand your money back.

This is a Disney flick, after all. There's magic and good-heartedness…but that doesn't diminish the fact that Geppetto is bluer than the Blue Fairy when we first meet him.

Geppetto is a kindly old woodworker who lives alone.

Although he doesn't have a family, he has a close bond with his cat Figaro and fish Cleo. Yeah: he's a legit lonely guy. One night, Geppetto looks into the night sky and sees a wishing star, so he asks the heavens to transform his puppet, Pinocchio, into a real boy.

To our utter shock, however, the heavens listen to Geppetto's wish. The mystical Blue Fairy comes down and breathes life into the wooden puppet. She doesn't fully transform him into a human, though: before that happens, Pinocchio must prove himself "brave, truthful, and unselfish. In a deeply questionable move, Geppetto sends the one-day-old Pinocchio off to his first day of school the next day.

Seems soon, right? Either way, Pinocchio gets snagged by two con artists named Honest John and Gideon, and sold to a puppeteer named the Great Stromboli. Pinocchio is a big hit as Stromboli's stringless wonder, but he realizes that he's in trouble when Stromboli locks him in a cage as soon as the show is over. Jiminy mounts a valiant but doomed rescue effort, and both dudes are saved in the nick of time by the Blue Fairy. Unfortunately, Pinocchio goes about two minutes before once again being snagged by John and Gideon.

This time they're working for the Coachman, a shady character who brings disobedient boys to a place called Pleasure Island. Because that's not super creepy.

Pleasure Island actually seems great at first. As we learn, however, the island is just an elaborate way to transform boys into donkeys for sale. That's what you call an entrepreneurial spirit.

The imperative of the novel is to be good and to study. Once Pinocchio has devoted himself to these goods, as a reward he transforms into a real boy.
